Issues

With all it has to offer, Beverly Grove continues to attract new people and new development. It's a great place to live and raise our families, and we are working to keep it that way.

But our cash-strapped city has not kept pace with investments in power and roads and emergency response.  Meanwhile, some factions at City Hall and in Sacramento favor growth that threatens the character and livability of neighborhoods like ours.

Senate Bill 79 ("SB 79")

LA needs more affordable housing, and the city already submitted a sensible plan to develop parcels on commercial corridors, like the strip malls on San Vicente Blvd.

Instead, the California state legislature passed SB 79, a bill that overrides ALL local zoning and allows big apartment buildings in many neighborhoods now zoned for single-family homes and small apartments.  Neighborhoods at risk are located within a half-mile radius of public transit stops like Fairfax & Wilshire and La Cienega & San Vicente.  This bill goes into effect JULY 1, 2026.

SB 79 could wipe out neighborhoods like Beverly Grove.  But it’s complicated and confusing, with lots of carve-outs and exceptions and moving targets.

BGNA is working closely with other community groups, our Council Office, the City Attorney, and other elected officials to protect our way of life and our homes.

Street Maintenance and Improvements

Potholes and broken sidewalks have become a way of life, because the city budget is stretched.  To make things even worse, the city of L.A. locked in sole-source contracts that charge way more for street repairs than they pay in other cities in our area – including Beverly Hills.  Ridiculous high costs mean that the city can keeps coming up short.

We are working with Council office and the City Attorney to turn things around by bringing city contracts and costs in line with what other municipalities pay.

Metro

In addition to opening the Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations, Metro is about to select the route for a line extension that will run north.  Both the route and the timing have major consequences for our neighborhood.  Our Councilmember, Katy Yaroslavsky, also serves on a key Metro committee.  We are in close consultation with her to get this right.

Ongoing Construction

We are keeping watch to make sure that projects in our area meet standards for health and safety and conform to code during demolition and construction.
